I guess it happens to everyone, some time or the other.
But No matter how lonely I feel, when it comes to loneliness, I am certainly not alone in this. It's something pretty interesting actually that there are many others who feel as lonely as me, at any given time.
On one of my lonely, not-so-happy days I stumbled upon this poem by Vikram Seth.
All You Who Sleep Tonight
All you who sleep tonight
Far from the ones you love,
No hand to left or right,
And emptiness above--
Know that you aren't alone.
The whole world shares your tears,
Some for two nights or one,
And some for all their years.

The Vikram Seth Poem is lovely, really short but great.
"Little do men perceive what solitude is, and how far it extendeth. For a crowd is not company, and faces are but a gallery of pictures, and talk but a tinkling cymbal, where there is no love."
- Francis Bacon
Thinking about it in a more general view of life, it requires so much courage, optimism and belief in greater good, for people to get through some of the most challenging times(and loneliness often forms a big part of these times). Many times, this "wishfullness" turns some of the bleakest non-existant probabilities into sound possibilities.
